There are no excuses for slobbishness. But, at the risk of getting political (a small party of you may, if you wish, assemble later and throw eggs at me...) there really is something about doing things that achieve engagement and inclusion rather than punishing. Without boring you (too late!!) an example of this is imprisonment: using prison as a punishment is a good thing, a grave sanction - but if we really want to reduce reoffending or reduce slobbish behaviour like the above, we need to make sure people are responsible for their environment, and no amount of banging up will do that, whatever we like to think. After - and during - the punishment must come the engagement with people. Some will be a lost cause, but lots won't be. If we really, truly want to change things ragther than just punish people, we need to change how we do that.
