13:5089265the british retail consortium has issued figures that show nicking from shops has risen from £99 million last year to £137 million thsi year. this works out at approx £400,000 per day. interestingly there has been a drop in the number of incidents of 11%, people now are liberating more expensive items.
i would have thought it was practically impossible to get away with it nowadays with security tags, more security staff and lots more stuff under lock and key.

14:1389269Do they refer to the amount stolen, or the cost of shoplifting? Different things. Those security measures are a cost we have to bear and are part of the total cost of shoplifting.

14:2189271the figures purely cover items stolen, the most popular are t.v.s(how do you get one out of a shop without anyone noticing?), computer games and clothes.

16:1089280Well it is indeed staggering how they manage it and fascinating too, i myself would make the worlds worst thief as i have a sign saying 'guilty' on my forhead. I always feel amazingly guilty walking through the customs for example even though I have nothing, how they never pull me over I dont know...thats a headscratcher that is!
But fascinating to see that despite all the prohibitions in place these days people can still do it..plenty of Artful Dodgers about it seems.

16:5989283there was a documentary many moons ago about britain's most succesful shoplifter.
she was caught very many times but the sentences and fines were so minimal that she build that into her costings and still make a very healthy profit.
her face was known to all the major stores but he could change her appearance so well that staff were fooled.
her biggest triumph was to half inch stuff from marks and spencer's, then take it back for a full refund.
i always thought you had to produce a receipt.

17:3989288I was speechless just before Christmas (it doesn't happen often....) when I was driving out of the Morrisons/Nettos car park and noticed a man walking fast carrying a whole mattress (in a box) rather clumsily, and who then started to speed up, and I then heard a woman shout "stop him". I saw two young women wearing the Poundstore tabardy-things chasing this man. He had nicked a mattress!!! For goodness sake - where does it stop? I also found out that someone had nicked one of the raffle prizes (a watch) out of the Barnardos shop window. I was, and am, flabbergasted.

19:0989302Bern that doesnt surprise me... store layout is all wrong.. but what would i know?! LOL! The loss in that place is huge and there is nothing that can be done because you have to catch them in the act to ban them from store and of course when they are banned from store because of the turn over you dont know who they are!
I think it does depend on the product and the store, i dont lose much because lets be honest i dont have the massive footfall and its a bit hard to nick a wedding dress :) Not that thats a challenge!

21:2389314Yes Jenni, very easy to steal from there. Straight up an aisle and out running most shops filter you to the tills then out.

22:5289325Hi Bern, we were in the Charlton Centre car park when said Man with Mattress on shoulder came racing through the ground floor and straight out the other entrance. The two poor ladies chasing him didnt stand a chance of catching him the speed him came through at. We were amazed as it was a bl**dy big box he had hoisted on his shoulder.

22:5889330i suppose that if he had been caught with the mattress, someone would have deep sprung him from the nick.

23:0789331Lets FACE it, it's too easy.
If the prat had of come running my way, he would have been flat on his back.........minus the mattress.

grass grows by the inches but dies by the feet.
