  this was the subject of much discussion here a year or two back, our transatlantic friends have moved on almost to self sufficiency in energy whilst we stick up the odd wind farm.

  I agree they are odd Howard but numerous if not controlled & of minimal value in producing energy returns.

  while our politicians dilly dally over alternative energy sources the u.s. has stormed ahead reviving their flagging industries and then leaving the europeans and chinese looking on helplessly

  But, but, but in the UK we're having our first Police Commissioner election. Our economy is set to roar ahead isn't it? It's all part of the government's master plan to set our economy off like a rocket I tell you.
  Still not a peep from the BBC about the discovery of the twenty-eight "experts" who advised them on their climate change policy and hence the government's. I thought the BBC were supposed to be balanced in their output.

  Britain can't save the planet philipP - as you know.
  
  I have (I think) the same view as you on green energy and how it will crucify us all, through unnecessary high taxes and costs.
  
  Americans have taken the lead on fracking; we had a couple of small quakes and it scare the hell out of us.

  Indeed Roger. Not to put too fine a point on it as one commenter put it the UK is succeeding in it's quest to drive it's own carbon targets downwards by exporting our emissions overseas:

  This issue is the biggest issue along with the third runway that we face. More expensive energy and higher bills means the end of the UK economy.

  I thought this was an intersting part of that article and until we wake up, we'll go on losing out to other countries. Being a small country and being as green as the Government say we should be, we'll all be even poorer, but in terms of saving the Planet, it won't make a blind bit of difference - here's that extract:
  
  Jeremy Nicholson, director of the powerful lobby group that campaigns for companies in the steel, chemical and glass industries, said that British companies could not compete against US groups because their energy costs were four times cheaper.
  
  He said Britain needed to develop its own shale gas industry, which would decisively transform the economics of the intensive energy industry.
  
  Britain should also pay compensation to firms that face huge bills to meet climate change targets, he added.
  
  'The solution for intensive industry depends on maximising the opportunity for responsible production of shale gas in the UK as well as completing the electricity market reform process so the UK can deliver low carbon nuclear energy and renewables at least cost to consumers,' he said.
