Unfortunately I have first hand experience of this. In October 2010 I contracted pneumonia and sepsis. Initially my GP gave me antibiotics which I took for 3 or 4 days. I was rushed to hospital shortly afterwards as I couldn't breathe, was drowsy and not making sense. After 6 hours of tests I was told I had a respiratory infection and sent home again. Less than 24 hours later my husband had to call an ambulance as my lips had turned blue and I wasn't responding. This time they performed a blood gas check and where shocked to find that my organs were shutting down and I was basically dying and should never have been discharged the day before. For 7 days I was hooked up to an IV antibiotic which is so powerful it can only be prescribed via the General Medical Council (the hospital have to ask permission.) I was basically 'out of it' for the first 3 days and they didn't know if I would make it but thankfully it started working. I was discharged from hospital after 9 days and took almost a year to recover not only from the sepsis, but also the effects of the liquid Domestos I had to endure. It literally 'burnt' my arteries. I sincerely hope no one has to go through that. I still suffer from a sort of post traumatic stress, having nightmares etc but on the upside, I'm still here!
