I suppose I should say I am amazed. It would be nice if I could. I would like to say I am surprised, but I cannot. I refer to the people of Dover, not all, but it does seem many, who are putting the lives of others at risk by their blase attitude to the current alarming virus which has hit our country. Today, Saturday the 21st March, I witnessed people totally ignoring social contacting advice and gathering in groups as they made their way along the High Street. As they met other groups, who they obviously knew, they created even bigger groups. Bus stop packed with up close contact. Will they never learn. Will they care if they infect someone who may die. Stockpiling eggs even!! I am utterly disgusted by it all, ashamed and hurt to think I live amongst it all. I came across the review below on an online review site and paste it here. It refers to the Morrisons store.
"Shame on the people of Dover who seem a law unto themselves when it comes to shopping and their alarming greed which is depriving others. Do they never watch the news or read papers? This morning I went into this branch, not to buy but to observe, and I was not unrewarded. Trolleys packed sky high and angry people no doubt taking it out on staff. Going by the items I saw in trolleys it is likely they would not have been allowed to purchase them all, but that is not the point. People, their is a national crises going on. It is the biggest since the last war. When are you all going to wake up and take notice!! When are you going to stop being so utterly selfish and uncaring!! When are you going to stop putting others at risk in the town and stop social gathering!! Is this town in some sort of alternate universe where all is well and fine thanks!!

Firstly, I have to say that it isn't just Dover this behaviour is a national problem.
My son advised me that having got on an empty bus the other day in London in order to go to work the next person who got on chose to sit next to him - DOH how utterly stupid.
Despite my best efforts this morning to maintain a sensible 2m distance from others when I nipped out for a few fresh veg and some bread, the under 40's seem to think it doesnt apply to them and that leaving a gap between you and others is an invitation for them to step into it...
As for the excesses of bulk/panic buying this seems to be particularly noticeable amongst younger (I am 60 so many people are) people with 20-30 something year old men being particularly aggressive and ars*y about what they perceive to be their right ot behave like complete and utter dic*s.
On top of this we have the delightful prospect of teenagers becoming progressively more feral as the prospect of school recedes towards September and there boredom skyrockets - seems as good a reason as any to self-isolate...

I only hope that our government will see fit to compulsorily dragoon all those students aged 16 years or over not able to go to schools, colleges or universities into some form of community service.Such was the case in the first and second wars when then it was national conscription. Is this not the third?

Rather irresponsible behaviour, I'd say. That reduces the amount of space available for genuine customers. And it also shreds your argument.

With reference to Morrisons those attempting to exceed the allowed number of various items the tills are programmed not to allow this, the trouble is they can not restrict the number of times a customer goes to the tills in a day.
I no longer believe a lot of this is panic buying I think they are greedy and selfish people who hope to sell on at a profit, a shame they are not being barred from the stores. Husband and wife both with trolley piled can high get away with it, in WW2 they would have been called spivs or black-marketeers.
BTW Morrisons are going to open 8.00am to 8.0pm but earlier 7.00am for NHS staff which will hopefully help my two wonderful neighbours.

It seems to have got out of hand with all the panic buying. Sainsbury’s have run out of delivery slots until mid April which I suspect is partly due to some people placing advance multiple orders to grab them.
Today their app was updated to allow, elderly and vulnerable customers who are not able to visit their stores due to self isolation, priority slots. They state that they are able to identify them through their normal shopping habits.......
(I told the wife that all the treats that she regularly buys for the grandchildren has probably put us in a different age group).
Very clever NOT as there are no means on the app of identifying those that fall into this group if they get their
guess wrong so I rang them to ask for guidance....30 minutes later after countless messages and a load of thumping music, I gave up!
They’ve obviously think that they have sussed out our age and our health conditions together with self isolation would mean that we might not be around too long to use it up and it would be a waste.......OR we are younger than we think we are!
‘Er indoors must think that the former applies, as when one of my sons rang to ask if we needed some shopping and the first item that she told him was some dog biscuits as she only had one packet in stock!

Do nothing and nothing happens.

Sorry, RB, I don't see your point. The poster has observed some people behaving selfishly (I'm not disagreeing: I've seen it too). But he's then backed up his observation by deploying a 'review' describing such selfish behaviour while failing to notice it was written by someone behaving selfishly (i.e. just 'observing'). A dramatic irony, if not a logical confusion. Unless his target was a double hit, i.e. both the observer
and the customers in Morrisons. But that meaning was not indicated by the post.
Besides, as these observations regularly come up on the coronavirus thread, we hardly need another one. And it simply buys into the fear that's generating the selfishness to use capitalised titles and triple exclamation marks.
It's hardly surprising people are buying up when the messages coming out of our mixed-up government are that most of us may be under house arrest for 3 months.

Some, no doubt. However, I've come to dislike "groupings" and collective nouns. Last week my 200+ Year 11s doing their GCSE mocks were, without exception, perfectly behaved young ladies and gentlemen and I was seriously impressed - not something that happens often. My only grouse is that they get to sit down and I don't.

I am not surprised by the negative responses to my post. As my trip was also personal, and I saw no reason to state this, I simply posted what was relevant. I actually went into the store to give some safety equipment to staff, masks etc, for free. I also intended to observe. No doubt had I said so there would have been similar responses. Strange how some can never find positive things to say about anything really. Thank you Jan, and others, for seeing the sensible side of my post.

This morning, SUNDAY 22nd March @ around 11am, on my way home from delivering food to an elderly couple, I observed the following. By the taxi rank near to BOOTS I saw a group of taxi drivers talking and laughing up real close. I thought how utterly selfish. Some poor unsuspecting person could climb into one of their taxis and possibly pick up this nasty virus if one of those drivers was affected. Because of their attitude it is unlikely that they would have been keeping their taxis as free as possible from any contact from passengers. You know, seat belts etc etc. As I approached this shocking scene, keeping a very safe distance, two POLICE officers walked from the other side of the road towards this group. I thought hey, great, they are going to advise them so break it up. Did they? NO THEY DID NOT. They joined in!! It is possible they were two PCSO's. Walking past, and no I did not intervene, (would you have done?) I looked back at this now enlarged group. The two officers were walking away leaving the group to continue.
