I am trying to understand the phenomenon where otherwise intelligent people take photos of themselves on a daily basis and put them on social media. Usually they are grinning inanely with the odd photo of their dinner.

I find the vast majority are boring and completely pointless, maybe it is an age thing.

Hm, I suspect that "otherwise intelligent people" may be an assumption - or at least a charitable way of looking at politicians who feel a burning desire to be 'on the case', of every case.

I I wasn't thinking of politicians as usually other people take photos of them, although most lap it up of course.

Same here Keith, much the same as the numerous pointless pictures that people post on line.
Digital cameras and mobile phones are to blame, the inconvenience and cost of developing a film stopped this new obsession from happening.

I believe it is a seasonal port-manteau term conflating "Santa" and "Elf", hence the plethora of people dressed in Cola Coca red and white hats and suits, taking SELFIES.
I hope clears up any confusion.
