Regular users will know about the chap employed in the Dover branch on a full time basis. The minimum wage is approx £.13000. staffing and administrative costs nearly double that. I'm guessing that the mark up average in the shop is around 20% at best.
An incredible amount of shop lifting would have to be carried out just to break even here.

For 2013 turnover of £880.5 million against operating profit of £30.1 million so profit at 3.4% or 2.65% after everything (tax etc)
If comparing turnover against gross profit they do 36.7%

I was surprised that they needed a guard in Poundland, but apparently the shoplifters will even thieve from there.

However much gets nicked will make up only a tiny fraction of the wages paid to the security chap.

Howard... I was thinking the same way as you are. But they have loads going in there with the idea of not paying. On one occasion they have caught 2 young lads (still school age) one ran off which they didnt follow the other was hold back... so I was shocked myself at that. Staff say its a daily issue :(

shoplifting is pretty rife, most goes unseen and the security guard mostly to deter and to stop the known pro shoplifters. They will take anything, even seen them stealing empty dvd cases so they can trade a game in as boxed. Most pro shoplifters will steal to a shopping list, and they will steal £100's if not £1000's in a day of goods. A lot of stores wont see what they have lost until a stock take. you will see it in supermarkets where people eat the food and then leave it on shelves.

Many years ago I bought a pack of 3 small tins of tuna, when I opened it at home the middle one was missing and was most impressed how they done it as the packaging was intact.
I was later told that it was almost certainly druggies that preferred to spend their disposable incomes on other things. Always open an egg box before buying as many have 5 rather than 6 inside.

Anything that has a high price and turnaround is prime. Like razor blades they are always stolen that's why they end up tagged, in display units, behind counters, as used to be most stolen item. If it isn't nailed down it will go walkies, have even seen shop pos go walkabouts.

In large self-service shops a security guard presence would be a usual condition of the insurance policy. They don't just stop pilfering, they are also there to deter vandalism and ASB.

Bought 5 items in poundland this morning and was charged £. 4. 50 found out why when I got home -a 6 bottle of water package contained only 5. Again I couldn't see any damage to the shrink wrapping.
Hope someone does it again 50p for 5 is good value.
