Going back to an earlier theme in this thread, the Taliban effectively eradicated poppy cultivation/heroin production in Afghanistan in the late 1990s/early 2000s. This was supposedly because drug use was considered to be un-Islamic but in truth was driven by the hope of getting sanctions lifted and UN aid coming in to the country. We should not forget that it was policy in the west to have the Taliban in control of Afghanistan and that they were given support in the form of money, arms and training from the very governments that are now portraying them as evil beyond compare. Neither should we forget the fact that western governments were prepared to turn a blind eye to the acts of the warlords (including the re-introduction of large scale poppy growing) as long as the warlords promised to support the emerging President Karzai. You really do reap what you sow.
