Very interesting article from yesterday's Grauniad G2 section - see below:
http://www.guardian.co.uk/artanddesign/2009/apr/23/artists-take-over-empty-shops
Shows what they're trying to do in Margate and elsewhere. In the light of schemes such as "The Spirit of Deal", could this be a solution for the myriad empty buildings in our towns, such as Dover and Deal Woolies for starters?
Has anyone tried to tap up the Arts Council for a bit of this arty-dosh?

I think it looks good - bright, imaginative and funky (although men of a certain age should never use the word 'funky', for which I apologise unreservedly).
Beats an empty, boarded-up shop spattered with broken glass, vomit and mindless fake Bronx graffiti, does it not?

The LRCF proposed this to the DTC & DDC some considerable time ago, to give DTC credit they offered £500 to help, but all DDC did was punt it off to Dover Pride and we have seen nothing since.
Frankly for a similar amount to that put up by DTC we could have got on and made a start at getting local youth organisations and schools to put murals and other artworks together as well as negotiating with landlords to put the resultant artworks on their buildings.

I've replied to this on another thread - a great article.
I've been talking to the Arts group on the first floor at The Charlton Centre about smartening up the closed shops with art-work and they are very keen to be given the opportunity to show off their skills.
Jeanette at the LRCF has been talking to various bodies too and of course Dover Pride have commissioned their own search for artistic talent, so there are lots of people ready and waiting for some one to squeeze the trigger on the starter pistol. But when will that be ?

What great ideas, and there is obviously the local will to get things done...........................are there any local reps looking in? (Rhetorical question).

When you say local reps Bern, do you mean Councillors or something else ?
Roger
Councillors mainly, but I guess I woud include anyone of influence who is known to represent Dover.
DTC has provided financial support to the Charlton group and is working with DDC and dover pride on this project - for more information see DTC Town and environment committee agenda - or better still go along to the next meeting.
