Santander is to close 56 UK branches to cut overlap and I expect Dover will loose one as we now have two Santander banks in Dover, if so which one will go? The sad thing is more people out of a job.

...or
They could cut the hours, but not the take-home wages, of all their staff in Dover. Open for longer and offer more assistance to individuals and small businesses? While saving on rent/rates/insurance etc.
[Possibly cheaper than funding redundancies]

No Tom, I expect not.
Yes it is sad, but inevitable.
One problem arising is from new capital adequacy rules being imposed by the EU require higher levels of reserves. The banks can get this in only two ways, price increases and/or cost cutting. We have already seen some mortgage rises as a result with Halifax and Lloyds. Now, Santander, with two branches in one small town I am surprised they have not acted sooner.

What's that Barry?
No chance of enhanced creativity;new business ideas, more broadening of scope? No offering of enhanced assistance to those armies of entrepreneurs champing at the bit and increasing income by helping to increase the income of their business customers?
Will they really double the foot-fall at their single branch and struggle to accommodate the needs of their Dover and district customer base in these times of (soon to be) increased prosperity?
Can the way forward into the Global thrusting economy be to exhibit a total lack of confidence and forethought and display the yellow-streak of abject cowardice?
Of course there are other banks.

A second branch recently appeared in a local shopping area here a few months back. I couldn't understand why. They have both been operating a few doors away from each other ever since. It doesn't make sense.
