I saw this story on the Sky News Press Preview. It was about Tesco supposedly saying that their customers are to blame for not selecting misshapen fruit and vegetables...thereby causing massive waste. But it is as ever a case of how the story is spun. The Daily Mail stuck the boot into Tesco in blazing angry headline style, while the Daily Telegraph saw it differently saying Tesco are looking at ways of encouraging people to buy misshapen foods...
Looks like Laura Sandys MP took the Daily Mail version onboard..
Latest Press Release as follows...
Laura Sandys, MP and food campaigner, today slammed Tesco for blaming shoppers for not buying 'ugly' food and "causing the majority" of food waste.
Speaking after Matt Simister of Tesco made the claims at a House of Lords inquiry, Laura Sandys said, "I cannot believe the audacity of Tesco to accuse hard pressed consumers of generating food waste - supermarkets need to be better at marketing ugly food and stop blaming consumers. While I agree that households do throw many products away, this is largely down to promotions which encourage waste, such as unnecessary BOGOF deals, and excessively strict sell by dates."
"In 2012 I set up a company called 'Ugly Food' to raise awareness of this very issue and to encourage the sale and use of misshapen food - something that another leading supermarket has now adopted."
