13:5865890Yes it is true by bring back Duty free as it was would save the ferry companys, and the walking daytripers and the none landers get them all back and we would see all the ferry companys making it pay again to keep ships in our port.

15:3665906Vic duty free wont be coming back anytime soon. Yes we all enjoyed our duty free and were sad to see it ditched, it was the last of the old trading dinosaur loopholes and was axed as I understand by our closer involvement with the European Union....under one of those treaty upgrades.
As the EU is apparently here to stay, with no major political party showing an interest in withdrawal, Im afraid duty free wont be returning.

17:0165923You can drive a lorry load of booze and fags from France to Germany and nobody cares.
You can drive a boot load of booze and fags from France to the UK and the HMRC will impound your car and confiscate your shopping, because THEY deem we are all potential criminals and are either incapable of drinking and smoking that much on our own, or we are smuggling for profit. Guilty until proven innocent.

the problems you refer to occurred after duty free was abolished.
before that time people were restricted to 200 fags and a litre of spirit, after the ending of duty free the limit went up to 800 and seemingly limitless beers and wines hence the problems, the reason the problem died is that the french government whacked on some taxes and add to that the strength of the euro against the pound, the problem resolved itself.
