Regarding CAERLEON: We visited Caerleon amphitheatre some years ago for a display by the Ermine Street Guard. Our friends who live near there, say:
"Peter Guest may well be a descendant of John Josiah Guest and Lady Charlotte of the famous Dowlais Ironworks. There were at least 10 children ( including the daughter who married Austen Henry Layard), and the name is v well known in South Wales still - Jamie Lee Curtis is current Lady Guest to Sir Christoper, the film star and director.
Of course, Caerleon was excavated famously by Mortimer Wheeler (before he became a Sir), in the 1920s. He was v gd at publicity, and I believe it was he who first suggested that it might be one site of King Arthur's Camelot! He certainly raised the money for a more extensive 'dig' than had ever been carried out at Caerleon before - he even got its progress on the new 'wireless' of the time!
Peter Guest may have read his predecessor's work, and carried it a bit further. We always knew it was a port on the Usk; hence the Roman Baths, the Museum, and the barracks - the Romans regarded it as a home port for at least 300 yrs."
