London to Brighton Cycle run:
Riding 60 miles through starlit countryside, Dover's Linda Hannent is cycling on the London to Brighton
cycling run this year - 26/05/12, but this time, overnight.
Linda is raising money for the British Heart Foundation - who can argue this is not a worthwhile cause ? She will be leaving the hustle and bustle of London behind her and letting the breaking dawn lead her to Brighton's Madeira Drive - after 60 stamina-stretching, muscle-pounding miles. Enjoy your much-deserved breakfast Linda !
Following 30 years of success with the (day-time) London to Brighton Bike Ride, the British Heart Foundation are proud to launch their London to Brighton Night Ride; it's sure to be a magical night (???) so please help Linda raise lots of money for heart research.
Please visit:

Heart disease affects us all - please do help.

Noise Annoys: Noise Action Week takes place 21-25 May 2012. This is a national, annual initiative to raise awareness of noise issues.
The Environmental Protection Team deal with noise issues from domestic, commercial and licensed premises. We offer a variety of services, including an Out of Hours noise service at the weekends, whereby Noise Officers can attend to witness a problem first hand and assess the level of nuisance being caused. There is also legislation available, allowing us to take enforcement action, when appropriate and based on our own evidence.
It is often the case that your Councillors receive noise complaints from you. I know there are a lot of Councillors who are aware of the services we offer complainants, but there may be some members of the public who would like to be updated or refreshed on how Dover District Council deal with noise. I am quite happy to talk to small groups as part of what we are putting together for Noise Action Week 2012. Please contact your Councillor directly if you would like a chat on noise, or have any complaints that need resolving.

Hose-pipe ban hits the High Street:
Dover Town Council has reluctantly announced that they will be suspending their plans for floral displays throughout the town this year. As part of its continued effort to make Dover a more welcoming place, the Town Council has been working in partnership with Dover District Council to deliver hanging baskets through the Town Centre as well as railing baskets along York Street.
Unfortunately, due to the water restrictions in place and notification from Veolia that any watering of plants from mains water is strictly prohibited, the Town Council has with great disappointment had to suspend planting for this year.
Dover Town Council does not currently have access to "grey water" (recycled water) which is the only legal form of watering at present, although it is now investigating innovative ways to collect water for next year should restrictions continue.

Dover Town Council & Dover Castle: In preparation for the upcoming Diamond Jubilee Celebrations, Dover Town Council has been working in partnership with English Heritage to ensure that Dover plays its part in the national event of the Lighting of the Beacons. This follows on from extensive work by the partnership to have Dover's beacon, which was originally purchased by Friends of Dover Castle to mark previous Jubilee celebrations, repaired and restored; bringing it back to life in time for the Queen's Diamond Jubilee this year.
Representatives of Dover Town Council were invited to Dover Castle to attend the trial lighting of the beacon and ensure that all the plans were in place for the actual event on 4th June 2012.
On the 4th June at approximately 10.00pm beacons around the country, including Dover's beacon situated at Dover Castle will be lit in celebration of the Queen's 60 year reign with the National Beacon being lit by the Queen at approximately 10.30pm. Dover Town Council and English Heritage will hold a small reception at the Visitor Centre at Dover Castle to celebrate this prestigious event.
Dover Town Council will also be organising a community event in the Market Square to coincide, where the Lighting of the Beacon will be televised live via the Big Screen. The event in the Market Square will be held from 7pm - 10.45pm, further details of which will follow.
It would be nice to hear from anyone in or around the town of Dover that gets a glimpse of the lit beacon at the Castle, to see the distance at which it can be viewed.

Charity Walk for the Stroke Association:
Claire Jones proudly presents........COUNT THE BRIDGES CHARITY WALK CANTERBURY
9.30am Saturday 5th May 2012. Meet by the bandstand in Dane John Gardens from 9.15am. This is to help me reach my London Marathon fundraising target for the Stroke Association.
My dad, a very experienced walk leader, will lead us on an enchanting and historic route. We aim to cross 36 bridges through Canterbury without crossing the same one twice. The distance is about 5 and half miles and is a flat walk at a leisurely pace. We will stop frequently to admire places and buildings of interest.
The walk will last two and a half to three hours and finish near the Marlowe Theatre.
Tickets are £5 per person.
If you can't come perhaps you may like to make a donation ?
