Fund-raising for stroke-victims
Blakes of Dover
Celebration of the Sea
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Dover Town Council would like you to know what they do with the planning applications they receive; here is their announcement:
PLANNING APPLICATIONS: Dover Town Councillors want to make the public aware of the fact that a number of planning applications are going through the district planning authority - Dover District Council, relating to the Dover Town Investment Zone (DTIZ) which includes plans for a hotel, bar, restaurant and car parking.
Dover Town Council is a statutory consultee and will always have a copy of the planning applications and any other assisting documents available for the public to view.
Planning applications are discussed by the Town Council at regular monthly meetings to which members of the public are invited. Details of the meetings can be found on the Town Council website
www.dovertown.gov.uk. Planning documents are also available in reception at the Town Council offices for the public to view and comment on.
If you would like to attend a Town Council planning committee meeting (or indeed a District Council Planning Committee meeting, where the actual decisions are made whether to accept or reject an application, just check the dates on the appropriate web-site and turn up.

Fund-raising for stroke victims. You may remember me sending an email round about Claire Jones running in the London Marathon to raise funds for children with Leukaemia ?
I have received an email from Claire who is running in the Virgin London Marathon in 2012, this time to raise funds for the Stroke Association - here is Claire's email:
" I am running the 2012 Virgin London Marathon for the Stroke Association in recognition of my grandmother Lynne, a stroke survivor.
Lynne suffered a serious stroke in 2010, and is still learning to live with its consequences. She was one of the lucky ones, she had treatment within 3 hours, thanks to the F.A.S.T. campaign. - don't forget that anyone can have a stroke, no matter what their age.
Suspect a stroke? Act FAST
What is FAST ?
Facial weakness - can the person smile? Has their mouth or eye drooped ?
Arm weakness - can the person raise both arms ?
Speech problems - can the person speak clearly and understand what you say ?
Time - to call 999
Please help me to raise money for them to continue their invaluable work by buying a ticket to come to my fantastic fun-filled Race Night on Saturday 11th February 2012 in Dover! (venue details to be announced soon).
All games, raffle tickets and races will be £1 per entry - so start saving those pound coins now !
Prices are £8 per adult and £4 per child under 16, or £40 per table of 6.
This covers the cost of running the event - hall-hire, organiser, and food, so that everything we make on the night goes directly to the charity.
Refreshments will be sold on the evening (but please bring your own alcohol).
A fancy dress competition will also be held, at £1 an entry, with an exciting prize for the winner. A must for the kids!
Further details will follow".
Claire has asked me to spread the word, so put the date in your 2012 diary. It will be a night not to be missed! You can buy your ticket in person from Claire who needs to sell the tickets in advance.
Please email her on
clairejjb@me.com if you have any queries or would like to arrange payment.
Claire is also looking for local businesses to sponsor some of the races (suggested donation is £20 per race but any amount is welcome) and/or donate raffle prizes.
If you can't come to the event but would still like to support Claire's fundraising, you're still welcome to donate.

Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving - they'll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they'll send your money directly to the charity and make sure Gift Aid is reclaimed on every eligible donation by a UK taxpayer. So it's the most efficient way to donate - Claire raises more, whilst saving time and cutting costs for the charity.
Don't forget, anyone can have a stroke, no matter what their age.

Blakes of Dover: as you may recall, I sent round an email about Blakes in Castle Street, restarting their Tuesday quiz nites.
Just to let you know they have started off well, a great atmosphere and good snacks to reward your (mental) efforts afterwards and it gets you out of the house.
Come along next Tuesday, with some friends and have your own team; our team have come second both times, but it's not the winning or losing, it's just a good night.
You may remember that I mentioned about their "school-dinners" on a Saturday lunchtimes; well, they are going very well,so Peter and Kathryn have extended these from Tuesday lunchtimes (they aren't open Monday lunchtimes) until they run-out, then start again the following Saturday with a new "school-dinner".
This week's dish is half a roast chicken, roast potatoes (cooked in goose-fat) and peas - for just £5.00. We tried them last Saturday and I can honestly say there can't be anywhere that offers such good food and such great value.
Just to finish of this piece, Blakes are doing their special brunch this Sunday - a full English breakfast, freshly cooked, is always available, accompanied by a themed breakfast - last month it was a typical Christmas/Palestine breakfast). This Sunday's brunch will be on Sunday 22nd, just before Rabbie Burns' anniversary, so they are making it a Scottish affair with all the usual breakfast dishes plus porridge, haggis and Scottish kippers.
It's still £12.50 per person, please email them if you wish to come (or call in for a drink perhaps tell them in person !) so they can calculate numbers.
Peter at Blakes has offered to wear a kilt if he gets £50 pledged for one of their house charities.
Enjoy a great brunchtime relaxing at Blakes, then stroll up to the Town Hall for the show of talent.

Steve Ladner from BBC Radio Kent and Gordon Skeggs will compare the show.
