Rocket Science Ice CREAM
- 6 June 2011 19:17109097Whilst in London at the weekend I rather fancied an Ice Cream. We were in Camden Town where daughter Briony lives and she announced she would take me to Chin Chin Labs at Camden Market to sample the best ice cream in London. I thought it strange we were going to a lab, I know she is a med student and loves all that science stuff but......
We arrived at Chin chin's and indeed it was an ice cream shop serving Nitro ice cream. All the staff were dressed like lab technicians and wearing lab glasses, It was a fascinating place.
Each order of ice cream was made to order. Mix-ins are poured into little rotating blending machines while Liquid Nitrogen from a well housed above the ceiling is pumped into the bowl. We watched them make four different types, using Liquid Nitrogen to flash freeze it. I had the barbecue banana with chocolate sauce and honeycomb shards. It was absolutely delicious. The chocolate ice cream with raspberry sauce looked devine, next time I'll have to have that one. We had to queue for quite some time, it is obviously a very popular place in Camden. I believe they are the only shop doing it here in the UK or indeed Europe.
Has anyone else experienced Nitro ice cream or seen it anywhere else? Also reasonably priced at £3.95 per portion. - 6 June 2011 19:39109098Sounds good. I shall be returning to my old stomping ground of Camden in the next couple of weeks so will have to look out for it.
- 6 June 2011 21:07109112I have to say I am an ice cream addict.... I just love the stuff summer or winter under 3 feet of snow and could eat it until it comes out of my ears.... never heard of this nitro-ice cream though....sounds great.....

But I thought this was something from CERN Colette..from the Hadron Collider when I first looked...you might remember brainbox daughter BB visited there when we were in Geneva a few years back. I thought this ice cream might have been a by-product of the Big Bang theory....lol!
But all sounds fascinating. Ooh the things you can do with liquid nitrogen!

Ah! yes, PaulB, I seem to recall you developed a headache at the mere mention of a day out at Cern, so I was the one to tag along with Briony and I thought I was in for a boring science day whilst you did what you do best, lounge about at Lake Geneva
But to my suprise it was a great day, I certainly know a lot more about protons and black holes now
