  The main thing I remember was the friendliness of local people very different from the usual tourist haunts.
  
  I can still remember the pub we stayed in, the "Black Swan" in Pickering. the hosts were so welcoming and informative and every evening we adjourned to the public bar which was populated by locals who all had an anecdote to impart.
  
  You are right Roger they do call it "God's country".
