Toured the North York moors many years ago using Pickering as a base. The whole area has stunning scenery with lots to do and visit.
The Levisham and Lockton steam railway is not to be missed.

Lovely area Vic, include Scarborough, Whitley bay as well as enjoying the beauty of Robin Hood Bay. Travel inland & North Yorks is stunning.

Jean and I used to go up to Stamford Bridge (big battle there just before the Battle of Hastings) to stay with my Aunt. Lovely village, great pubs too.
We went to Robin Hoods Bay and I believe it was Staithes, lovely places, Whitby too is lovely with the Abbey up on the Hill. I don't think we saw anywhere that wasn't good.
Don't they call it "God's Country" ?

The main thing I remember was the friendliness of local people very different from the usual tourist haunts.
I can still remember the pub we stayed in, the "Black Swan" in Pickering. the hosts were so welcoming and informative and every evening we adjourned to the public bar which was populated by locals who all had an anecdote to impart.
You are right Roger they do call it "God's country".

Maybe we will not come back then.
We are looking forward to going both of us can not walk far anymore but that does not matter ,
I said to Lesley we are going to get out and around and see as much as we can.
So we have cut back to the bone but we are getting out more.
