23:0584282I must say it has been very grim here today .I was so cold at one point i nearly went to bed .I was able to boil water for a cup of tea as my cooker has a gas hob .I walked round to my sons just after three and
he had decided we would all go to The Railway Bell where we received a very warm welecome .Lovely roast dinner .
They had been busy suppling the Nursing homes with flasks of hot water so the residents could have a warm drink .
The Mill were lucky to have power .The lunch for over 80 people at the Methodist Church went ahead as they have a gas cooker ,however they were without heat and light .
We now have a large generator art the sub station top of our road and I understand there is another in Minnis Lane .
Im surprised that people have put their Christmas Lights on .Did not live through the three days weeks and unprepared power cuts .
I recall it well my husband was away working and i had to use candle light .Ihad two children under five so it was hard work .
I must be getting old as i cannot stand the cold these day
The hot air on here could have heated our street .

23:1284283yes susan we heard about the power cut from your near neighbour victor.
i agree with you about the cold but the comment about the hot air espoused here is a trifle harsh.
now wonder that nigel has chosen to go into hiding.

23:1584284When did it happen Sue, came home at around 2pm to find no power, came back on at around 8:45 pm.
I did see the generators being delivered and the empty trucks leaving.

23:4984287I go out that way quite alot Sue, my daughter is a unit manager at the nursing home and at 4pm I had a call to see if I could supply any torches and such like.
Within 20mins i went out ther with 7 lanterns and torches to keep them going for a while.

23:5884290Sorry to hear about the power cut, it all seemed quite exiting to a schoolboy in the 1970s...candlelight and a battery radio made it special.
However, we were lucky to still have a coal-fired hot water system and parrafin stoves in the rooms, so did not really miss Captain Scarlet on B&W 405 line TV and a three-bar electric fire all that much.
It does seem that too much relies on the'leccy these days for even in a shot power-cut the ntral heating will not work without an electric spark to ignite it and a pump to circulate it.
Keep warm!...

Oh Boy!, That'll be the day.........

00:5484301We used to get a lot of power cuts in Tilmanstone as Kath will know so I know exactly how those affected in River felt. You have my sympathy Sue at least you had a hot lunch.
We had a short one here in Salisbury Road area the other night so annoying having to reset the central heating and all the other electrical items with clocks. We get at least one a year in this area about time the cables or substation were replaced very annoying.
I agree Sue, the three day week was absolute hell but at least then any gas appliances did not need electricity to work only a match.

01:2884306We had a power cut about 5 weeks ago, in Tilmanstone, lasted about 8 hours. Neighbour was away and their trip switch cut everything off so they lost everything in freezer.
Once we had the power off in late morning on Christmas Day !!

11:1284320I still have some of the candles I bought "in case" during the 3 day working week crisis. Perhaps I should have put them on the other thread "you're useless but..."

22:2184689Just to update you all .We do have power only because we have generators situated all around the village .I did think it might be an idea to put all the election
posts into a bin and obtain power that way .
I have had a complaint about the noise but better that than no heat or light .
