Its a con ,self employment was used to get national insurance numbers ahead of the borders opening in January .
This allowed circumnavigating of transitional rules for Bulgaria and Rumania
When people come to the uk they get a dubious payslip ,this can be from collecting scrap metal ,to selling the big issue.
when they have this, they can get a U T I self employed number.
When they have this, they can get housing benefits ,tax credits child benefits ,register with a doctor and send the kids to school
Lot of employment agencies are happy to have so called self employed ,cleaners ,fruit pickers ,factory workers as bogus self employed CIS4.
The taxpayers are picking up the tab for all this abuse,
Most of these people are claiming a lot, of in work benefit ,but not contributing very much back in to the system.
One child will cost the taxpayers £5000 a years alone in school fees .

Keith is correct, I had a meeting with somebody recently.
To claim benefits you need a NI number which ordinarily you cant get for 3 months, however if you say you're self employed you are given one immediately.

brian the tax threshold is currently 10 grand with another 3 grand for married couples allowance, therefore anyone working full time on the minimum wage would not be paying any income tax.
on top of that comes working tax credit and child tax credit.
