Very sad to hear that the ex Kent skipper has lost his fight with cancer. My friend and I followed that great one day side in the 70s that claimed so many trophies at weekends and in school holidays. Those were the days when Kent would play at Crabble once a year too.

The Obituary has been amended...
"An obituary for the cricketer Mike Denness (20 April, page 43) said, because of an editing error, that in scoring 99 and 112 in a Test match against the West Indies in 1974, Denness put paid to Geoff Boycott's chances of taking over as England captain. It was Boycott who scored those runs, helping England level the Test series and Denness retain the captaincy."

My husband was a big Kent fan and armed with his sandwiches went to their home games whenever he was not working.
RIP Mike Denness.

It was a great partnership Howard and to this day I have never seen a pair that was better at going for quick singles, it was like they were telepathic. When called up for England they would often bat with Boycott, the worst runner I have ever seen! Had the pleasure of playing against Mike Denness , he was a true gentleman and a superb leader, RIP.

Farewell Mike Denness, cricketer and Scot
somewhat affected by the nominative determinism of Geoffrey Boycott
Raised on the latitude of Pringle's
Famed for balletic, quick singles.

Like Judith I saw Kent play Lancashire (my home county) at Crabble when I first came to Dover in 1970 and saw Colin Cowdray and Mike Denness play.
RIP Mike Denness.

What a team Kent had in the 70s with Mike Denness, Colin Cowdray, Brian Luckhurst, Allan Knott, Derek Underwood, Alan Ealham. The lesser known team members were very good too: Graham Johnson, Asif Iqbal, John Shepherd etc......

Mid to late 70s was when I was a Kent season ticket holder and all the above featured regularly, although I think Colin Cowdray retired well before 1980 to be replaced by his sons of course.
