The black people I have spoken to today tell me...
Six Police cars stop and block-in one mini-cab, in each police car there are more than one rifle carrying police 'marksman'. A rifle is placed to the side of the head of the passenger in the mini-cab and he is ordered to 'freeze', he is then dragged from the car and shot.
What we the public hear is that there was an exchange of gunfire between the police and a suspect (who was under close surveillance) a policeman was shot and his life saved only because the bullet struck his radio.
Clearly. What was reported about the incident was way wide of the mark. The Police may have messed up again, yet another heavily gloved finger may have slipped, an unarmed man faced with armed men may have appeared threatening and was shot. BUT for the Police to sit back and allow a wholly incorrect and misleading tale to hog the headlines, then to refuse to talk with the concerned people that they (the police) are supposed to 'serve' is no more than a retreat. A retreat from duty, from professional conduct and from the rule of law. Having thus retreated a vacuum of lawlessness was created and this vacuum was filled.
Had the police not decided to run away and hide and coral themselves in their fastness and not dare even to come out and talk. Law-abiding people would have held sway and life, limb and property would not have been abandoned by the very forces who take pay to act entirely otherwise.
