    Ford is classed as an Open prison with Cat D inmates who are of low risk and have earned their place there are housed and should be made ready for release back into society.

    They are normally allowed to seek work paid or unpaid within the local community and are expected to contribute towards the cost of their upkeep.

    Drugs and alcohol are banned but it would be impossible for staff to search everyone and everything entering the establishment with the staff on duty.There were only 6 officers on duty the hight of the riot for 500 inmates.

    As usual you only get what you pay for and this has been reflected by an increasing prison population but decreasing the number of officers employed.
