12:1187123on the news this morning we see pictures of a riot at ford open prison in west sussex.
considering that inmates at open prisons are there to be prepared for imminent release, what sort of bird brain would rock the boat and get sent back to a closed nick?

12:2387124Since midnight there has been a shooting ,A riot, two car bombings and god knows what else want do these people think new year is the signal to start killing. Now is the time to really start thinking about bringing back some kind of death penalty back to this country, then if they want to go out killing then we will have the right to kill them.

14:1487135that particular jug has been in the news before about the ease in which drugs and mobile phones were smuggled in.
what with booze now being freely available, maybe the riot was started over who got the money back on the empties?

08:2187225The big question surely must be, "how do the prisoners get the alcohol, drugs and mobile phones" ?
Either their visitors are not searched properly or the prison warders give it to them; why is that so difficult an issue to resolve, or am I missing something obvious ?

09:0787228sounds like same old story, short staffed tio probably save money
warnings were not heeded
managers decided not to act on prison wardens and the inspectorates recommendations.
so yes in the short term probably saved money
in the long term though cost a fortune

10:0087229They covered this on Breakfast this morning, apparently it is possible to lob items over the wall and there might not be suffiant surveilance to stop this happening. Because they only have a skeleton staff at night problems are usually dealt with when the day shift are on, but this is at the discretion of whoever is in charge at night-time.
The really sad thing about this is that the regime at open prisons could well change, that will possibly spoil things for the innocent prisoners who were not involved. Those in open prisons are supposed to be low risk prisoners, it is the usual thing of a few idiots ruining the status quo for everyone else.

I try to be neutral and polite but it is hard and getting even more difficult at times.

Ford is classed as an Open prison with Cat D inmates who are of low risk and have earned their place there are housed and should be made ready for release back into society.
They are normally allowed to seek work paid or unpaid within the local community and are expected to contribute towards the cost of their upkeep.
Drugs and alcohol are banned but it would be impossible for staff to search everyone and everything entering the establishment with the staff on duty. There were only 6 officers on duty the hight of the riot for 500 inmates.
As usual you only get what you pay for and this has been reflected by an increasing prison population but decreasing the number of officers employed.

17:0087277i can see why there are so little staff at these open prisons, the vast majority must want to keep their nose clean and get release as quickly as possible.
what possessed the rioters to take that action is beyond comprehension.

15:4187701problem we have is over crowded prisons so every govt is releasing prisoners early.
open prisons look like from reports on tv(if correct)far to open, if public can pass thgings to prisoners.
very worrying also if correct the number of staff on duty that night compared to prisoners.
so any cost savings all lost with the fire
