As the recession belt tightens around the UK economy. Even the normally protected food sales have fallen, along with electrical and white goods.A rise in fuel prices, inflation and pay freezes are to blame and are biting hard for the poor consumer.
Ed Balls is asking for a cut in VAT to boost the economy but the last VAT cut cost the government £12 billion in lost revenue.
So its the same old problem.... we all know we have to pay off our debts its just the speed of repayment which is causing the rift between the coalition and the opposition.
All this on the day after the Greek economy took a nose dive and it could pull down Germany and France unless yet more money is loaned to bail them out.Who was it that said.. ''beware of Greeks bearing gifts'' maybe that should read ''begging bowls''.

I would guess retail sales are bound to drop when the housing market slumps, because there is often no reason to buy that new kitchen or carpet or furniture etc.
Our shop takings are the same or even very slightly up but we are not getting the higher value items being donated that we used to receive.

Retail sales probably fell last month because people were paying off their credit card bills from the previous month's partying with Mother's day, royal wedding, easter and school holidays etc etc

We also had wedding anniversary and wife's birthday in April.
Mine are grown up but youngest daughter's birthday and grandson's first this week - oops, nearly forgot about 95 year old father-in-law, triple whammy!

people are saying that the monthly paid ( nearly all of us ) are showing the spending habits at moment ----- really busy once paid and the last couple of weeks in month gets quieter --- ask any cafe or retailer

Regards the bailouts mentioned in post 1, I read the other day that the German economists do not expect Germany will ever get back the money loaned to Greece.
That in turn will ensure retail slumps in the future to all countries loaning money to other countries that simply go bust.
