Veering off a bit from the original Republican nominations idea of this thread and carrying on with the 'world police' notion for a moment. The BBC's Question Time was interesting in a number of ways last night and not least for the Syrian content of the evening.

I learned something new from Defence Secretary Philip Hammond last night...something I didnt know. As ever the audience were clamouring for something to be done to help Syria, as were panel members too..some calling for troops on the actual ground there. But Mr Hammond said that the Syrian armed forces were a different kettle of fish altogether in comparison to what we had seen in Libya and Irag.

He said they were a formidable force, the army totals 325,000 troops all armed with the latest hi tech Russian equipment..state of the art tanks, state of the art anti aircraft systems, and so on. Hammond said that there was only one nation with a force that could handle such a formidable group, and that was the United States.

I didnt know that the Syrians were such a formidable outfit. No wonder they have the confidence to swagger their power daily. It seems therefore that there is little either France or Britain could do in this situation on their own...once again we would rely on the Americans. But have we become complacent relying on the Americans to do all the dirty work, have we all become lazy.

Is there nothing we could do in reality other than just recall our ambassador. It seems to be the case.
