Ghettos warning
"Overcrowding due to mass immigration will put unsustainable pressure on the South-east and turn once glorious seaside towns into "third-world township ghettoes", according to Paul Carter, the leader of Kent County Council. He warned: "The pressure is growing in our coastal communities. We need government to give us help. We are getting a large concentration of vulnerable people of variable ethnicity creating a lot of pressures on public services of all different types."
The local authority is currently preparing a report which will call on the Government to demand a radical approach to the problem in towns such as Margate, where up to 3,000 Romas have set up homes in cheap, low-quality private housing or have been given council flats. Mr Carter also comments that he wants councils to be given the power to close down poor private-sector landlords who are exploiting the newcomers."
