Roma forum seeks EU assurances
"Assuring civil rights and improving protection of Roma communities should form a stronger component of European Union accession conditions, according to the European Roma and Travellers Forum (ERTF).
That is the message the Forum's president Rudko Kawczynski will take into his Strasbourg meeting tomorrow with Vice-President of the European Commission Viviane Reding.
"We need to send a message to states that they have to ensure the values of the European Union," he said. "We want to see more cooperation between the EU and the Council of Europe on human rights and civil rights for Roma."
The forum wants EU post-accession monitoring to be strengthened to encourage governments to fulfill their obligation to protect Roma communities more effectively.
The ERTF will also ask for assurances from the commission vice-president about EU willingness to tackle 'Romaphobia' in member states."
