About time they tackled this problem I know of a few locally that have been here more than 5 years, which means they have saved a small fortune in road tax, insurance, MOT's, parking fines etc.

Enforcing it will be a nightmare, who exactly will do it?

Probably just another PR stunt but why have Revenue and Customs not shared this info with the DVLA before?

I would love to know the true cost to the country of the estimated 350, 000 dodgers who are being subsidised by the honest motorist. I don't think staff cuts are the whole reason Brian, Revenue and Customs only have to alter a programme slightly so that all information is shared with the DVLA.

With all the various cutbacks, money saving exercise by the DVLA now with no tax discs things are only going to get worse. All very well them on about the police with the ANPR cameras fitted (automatic number plate recognision),but what police.I,m regularly on the roads all day every day and locally just how often do you see a proper motorway style patrol car in the dover area? Its hardly ever.If youre not venturing too far out of town i doubt if you would ever get stopped and checked, there just isnt anyone around to enforce it.If regret to say that if youre running dodgy, theres never been a better time to do it.

Andy, they are not relying on police, most of the ANPR cameras are static. Most won't get stopped by police while driving without tax but will be logged automatically and then DVLA will follow up.
Of course that only works if your car is registered to you.

Exactly!,and many have several owners without being registered.I believe there are already these cameras on motorways but are they likely to be fitted in small towns such as ours?

I'm told that there are 2 on Jubilee Way. My informant did not tell me where exactly.

Foreign number plate, never been registered here or insured, that will include thousands of bona fide visitors coming off and going back to the ferries daily, the ANPR will be very sophisticated if it can pick out an offender for road tax offence out of those.

There are two cameras (one for each lane) on London Road right outside my house.
Further up the road are a couple of Polish registered cars that have certainly been around for more than 6 months. I have mentioned before an Italian car that parks with impunity (i.e. unbothered by CEO's) just down the road.

So are these cameras on London rd the ANPR,s or just the normal CCTV types?Think i,ve seen the Polish car,is it a white Vauxhall Omega estate that faces the wrong way?

That one is further up the road Andy. The street light column carries both the towns' CCTV and a pair of ANPR cameras. I'll get a picture when the currant bun returns on the morrow!

Grotty picture but then it's a grotty day! At the top is the town CCTV camera, below that you can see the two ANPR cameras with attached infra red lamps.

This is one of the traffic cameras that Karlos referred to. This is the rotatable version, there are also fixed types that are smaller, about the size of a tennis ball.
