In the case of DTC, Jan, I would suggest that the current Town Clerk might also have justifiable questions raised as to the value of her role.
As to the influence of politics in local government, then you need only look as far as my particular cause celebre - the (hopefully) now moribund Farthingloe development. A perfect example of council officers being overriden by political considerations. And a quarter of a million quid of taxpayers' dosh being spaffed away on a legal case that only the property speculators stood to benefit from. Utter disgrace.
