You are having a laugh?.The small percentage you pay is not worth grumbling about .Perhaps you could open your eyes see how it’s like in the real world .I suppose you are on band G or H .?You might like working in the snow carring other people’s rubbish .Give me strength :::

As I have 'carried other people's rubbish', I both claim grumbling rights and a higher position of virtue from which to do so.

I look at the expensive council tax and what we get for it .
Just looking at 2 small items
In my road when the council owned grass in cut , it is left behind then walked into people's homes .
So I contacted DDC and asked why do those cutting grass not then take it with them .
The reply was that it's not in the contract .
Of course this is privatisation at its best .
Who the hell made the contract !
Road sweeper
Not one been seen on my road since we moved here in 1999
So I contacted DDC and was told they only concentrate on zones (town centre )
And if people complain they may send someone along.
Who made that contract ?
So town gets a daily road sweeper
My road gets none
Crazy times
They also state they have no money
But they pay officers over £150,000
Come on something is not quite fitting here .

You are missing the point Keith .The refuge collectors we’re clearing snow then we’re called off the rounds when the ice was too bad .They worked Saturday .They have to catch up when then can .They cannot get more staff out of the blue .Its got nothing to do with officers wages red herrings.

Well, we get flocks of Port Health Officers because it goes without saying that a) the UK MUST protect itself from EU food and b) this MUST be done within 6" of our coast, so that means (correct me if I'm wrong) the District pays.

So there goes my Council Tax right there. In fact, it's nowhere near enough and not a bean left over to spend on anything else. Of course, I'm proud, happy and thrilled to be one of Mrs E's investors, so thanks for that, Gnat!

Sue
We do agree on many issues but the above we don't .
The high wages of officers is of concern In a town that is struggling for survival
Officers at the top earning such wages is quite a monopoly in councils which wouldn't wash in other jobs.
So yes it has an effect when there's not the money to carry out the Simone contracts on grass collection etc .
I just widened the debate a little

Get rid of the Town council that would make a very big saving and cut back on Parish councils

They cannot over rule the D,D,C, PLANS so what is the point of them being there?

The only real purpose of Dover Town Council and Parish Councils is to give those who are councillors a sense of self importance. These two bodies have minimal power to do anything that DDC could not do given the willpower, out of the two DTC is the biggest waste of tax payers money.

Parish councils only work well when you have dedicated people serving on it .This Covid situation is a prime example .I know one Parish Council who ensured some of their elderly residents were getting food .Etc.Many elderly people are self isolating this is where a Parish Councillors can help.Parish Councils donot work well unless they listen to residents .

Parish Councils are the first port of call when things go wrong for residents, they field the anger, discontent and frustration of the local community. However, they are only efficient and effective if they have hardworking people ( who have no political motivation) on the team. I know some rural communities have been fighting for years to have lighting repaired and restored whilst DDC/KCC argue about who is responsible. Parish councils need people who have more to contribute than personal grievances about speeding and dog mess.

In the case of DTC, Jan, I would suggest that the current Town Clerk might also have justifiable questions raised as to the value of her role.
As to the influence of politics in local government, then you need only look as far as my particular cause celebre - the (hopefully) now moribund Farthingloe development. A perfect example of council officers being overriden by political considerations. And a quarter of a million quid of taxpayers' dosh being spaffed away on a legal case that only the property speculators stood to benefit from. Utter disgrace.
