Reagan Statue

William,14 pints a night, Hague grovelled like Uriah Heep yesterday as he unveiled a statue of President Reagan outside the US Embassy in London. Reagan would have been a 100. I'm not sure who pays for it or what the process is for obtaining permission to have a statue erected...however the pigeon poo collector and dog pee-ing station is there for all to see.
There are monuments created to exceptional living people - a statue of Nelson Mandela was unveiled in 2007 in Parliament Square, for instance, and earlier that year a bronze of Thatcher was erected in the House of Commons (are you having a laugh)

It was also reported that one MP was calling for Tony Blair to be honoured in the same way, but there wasn't much enthusiasm.....I wonder why?
So who would forumites like to see set in stone in Dover and why? - Oh they have to be dead first -so no Mafia style concrete wellington type suggestions about the left wing guinness swilling lotharian style forum editors,nor right wing hang em and flog financial advisors or absent loud mouth northern opinionated poles living in Jersey.
- but exception to the rules are wine bar owners who refuse to have stannah stair lifts installed for the elderly and inembriated or any female forumite that fails to cook,wash,clean ,iron and take care of her husbands matrimonial rights both up or downstairs. Now if that doesn't get me in hotwater nothing will

Reagan was a great US President and it is only right that this British ally should be honoured.
As for who should have a statue erected in Dover - well, what about Dame Vera?

I'm not one for honouring in such a way, certainly there are more deserving cases than these, if we have to go that route.
I share your view on bill newman if it came to freeman of Dover, knowing bil, and working closely with him for 30 years i saw his many talents.
He had a talent of making everyway feel at ease nomatter what there background, but he usd to also go that exra mile.
I recall one small example with bill who asked me to go with him to calais to meet the mayor as bill had been a dover mayor in the past, and this was another great friendship bill had formed,.
Bill spoke little french, and the mayor spoke little english, but that didnt deter bill, in bills broken french he managed to string a few words together and the two got on like a house on fire througout the long day, it was fantastic day, to see the 2 getting on so well, but this was again because bill would go that exttra mile to make an effort.ALL POSTS ARE MY OWN PERSONAL VIEWS - 5 July 2011 08:38113213Marek - no freeman is the correct term, lets have none of that pc word butchery.

Dame Vera will forever be associated with Dover and her popularity will continue.
She qualifies more than anybody else to have a statue erected and become Freeman of Dover. The kudos to the town would be more immense than if it was anybody else.
