Today we have the annual annoucement that our PRIVATE railways are to put up fares by 6% this is these days hitting the communters more than taxpayers which is probably the correct way, but big fare rises again on the way.
rail companies denying the £6billion they get in the majority goes back into services only 3p in the pound goes to shareholders.
what do forumites think?

Im afraid its an annual occurence nowadays, the annual hike in rail fares. The cost of commuting to the great capitol from here is prohibitive. The HST was supposed to bring about a change in our fortunes here in Dover..but sadly it hasnt so far. But it is a great train so maybe it will in the long term ..as long as we are not priced off it.
Although I believe generally rail passenger numbers are soaring, i think I remember this on the news a while back but its just off the top of my head, so maybe the idea of rail fare hike is to limit their use somewhat, curtail the crowds.
The shareholders have to get a return on their investment.

the railways know from old they have a captive audience in the commuters
rail fares are so high for most hardly likely to encourage people out of other forms of transport

I think it used to be the government remit one time to encourage people away from other forms of transport and think green, go get a train kind of thing, but I think that one has been quietly shelved by HMG.

Misuse of funding by network rail and sub-contractors are the reason.
Back to that word, greed again.
My son has travelled as far as Portsmouth, Wales, Newcastle, Norfolk and London this year, never once has he been closer than London, all his team live here.
The job in Newcastle took them 4 nights in a hotel, for 3 working days and they replaced 3 sleepers, over the 3 days.
That job cost a fortune, when a local team could have done the job in a couple of hours for much much less.
Why is this practice of sending teams all around the country,when it could be done by local teams at a fraction of the cost?
I know the answer.

i would like to see an upgrage from indian subcontinent railway carriges we got now to a better ones with more seats.

If my sons firm tendered for work close to home, his employer's rate would be much lower, with no subsistence for travel, food, accommodation etc.
So firms in Norfolk tender for jobs here and vice- versa, boosting their income as well as its employees, with tax relief on travel, food and accommodation, all adding to the pot.
Also sometimes, these are sub-contractors, that work for sub-contractors, that work for Network Rail, that itself is raking it off(ripping it off) the Taxpayer.
