  that is what i call them but every time i am stopped in town by english or overseas visitors they refer to the train station when asked directions.
  
  yesterday i was stopped by a canadian chap who asked for the railway station which took me by surprise, i suppose english is a living language.

  That's because, Howard, la Gare des chemins de fer is commonly knows as "la Gare".

  I thought most people now used the expression train station, my family and friends have done so for ages.

  I try to be neutral and polite but it is hard and getting even more difficult at times.

  I always refer to the railway station. Another example of the changing language is "Phone Book" rather than "Telephone Directory", not than many people use it these days, so much easier to Google.

  Tonight a tourist asked me the way to the train station (this is fact).
  I instantly thought of this thread and gasped: what a coincidence.
