for those who commute by rail on a daily basis this will be a kick in the teeth.
i thought travel would be a bit cheaper on the continent but this is a real eye opener.

i was expecting there to be differences of somewhere between 10 and 50 per cent depending on the country.
1000 per cent is outrageous.

I can confirm that. My nephew commutes a similar distance into Paris St-Lazare on air conditioned luxury double deck trains for €650 a year.

must be some heavy subsidies going around, the logic must be that these capital cities would be clogged up totally if fares were high enough to encourage people to use their cars.
rail fares into london are akin to criminal because the rail companies know that car users face the congestion charge and sky high parking fees.

Howard it is all down to the difference between privatised and state run railway systems. The major difference is not necessarily the level of government subsidy, as this still goes on in the UK despite privatisation, but the profit shareholders in private rail companies expect.

Some interesting points, albeit from the Guardian. Certainly in line with Ross' points.
