Had a letter at work today telling us that although Tuesday 5th June 2012 has been made into a Bank Holiday, as our contracts of employment only state that we are entitled to 7 days Bank Holiday, they will not recognise this extra one!! So all staff have got to vote and either select that the company will shut down for the day and all staff will lose 1 days holiday or we remain open and 1st come 1st served can take a days holiday!! Which ever gets the most votes is what will happpen!! I think that they know that the majority will vote for shutting down for the day so everybody will lose a days holiday and the company gains about 200 days work by not recognising the Bank Holiday!!

that's a new one on me, usually contracts state the holiday entitlement plus bank holidays.
must be a new thing to stipulate the number of the latter.
There is no statutory rights to Bank Holidays under British employment law , the legal minimum 5.6 weeks can include bank holidays , its all down to the agreement with the employer and what is stated in the contract of employment , The NHS has annual leave plus 8 bank holidays and 2 non statutory holidays , after a qualifying period of employment , This is not a usual arrangement in the private sector the majority of staff in this sector are entitled to 5.6 weeks inclusive of any Bank Holidays .

I have never understood why employers are expected to pay staff to do nothing.

I fully support all private and public sector workers that do make it into work on this day.
At least the people that are the reason for this day have an attitude of 'Work to Rule'.
