Last night I attended the meeting on What will happen to Dover after Brexit.
The concern was that the roads will become clogged up if we have all these checks.
It's fair to say the Govt appears not to be in control of the situation, and for any Dovorians(like me) It is a serious concern.
We are running out of time, and need answers as to what is to be done, to stop Dover coming to a standstill.
Hopefully the politicians locally will steer clear of party politics(as we saw one party flooding the meeting and promoting its parliamentary candidate) as this issue is far to important to play politics with.
Very good examples on how this Govt isn't prepared enough for changes,
There is an on line petition going to the govt
and to transportation board
and some KCC committee
It is an issue we should all be concerned on........

The powers that be are not in any hurry as we know and they are relying on an ever longer transition period. The Civil Service say that they are a long way off from having the technology that would enable traffic to go through as seamlessly and my guess is that we will remain in the Customs Union for another 4 or 5 years.

I think you are right, Howard. Why on earth would they decide to hide the reality of the situation in Kent (and obviously Dover in particular) under a veil of contrived secrecy? Having worked in the cross channel business for most of my adult life I can tell you that my industry contacts are well aware of what awaits us if we do tumble off the Brexit cliff.
News today indicates that pragmatism is trying to prevail in so far as sainted Theresa has persuaded the cabinet to endorse a further extension of the transition period. But will the right wingers allow it? Even if they do, the EU is now far too fed up to take the pragmatic approach. Eurotunnel's plans for the reinstatement of its duty free shops in Coquelles are well underway so they clearly expect a hard break of some kind. Not that that means much in itself but the EU will not play ball with us forever. I'll wait for the torrent of abuse now from the "they needs us more that we need them" fantasists.

So, the PM, Ministers and the Civil Service with its legions of legal advisors can't agree on the way forward but amateur local councillors are on hand to fix the issue with the help of a petition? Priceless.

It would be ironic if French politicians went vocal 5 minutes after any hold-up our side, in the same way as our MPs go vocal 5 minutes after any French Labour dispute and the like their side.

One hopes that the organisers of the various petitions which have been circulated in the district on such as parking charges, library help desks, and now 'brexit' are not being used to collect data on persons who might be susceptible to possible future support of any political party which would, of course, be illegal under the recently enacted General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
Just saying. I'd hate anyone local to get prosecuted because they don't understand the legislation.

Its Ok found it:
Transport expert saying that an extra minute on lorry checks could lead to queues from Dover and Eurotunnel in Folkestone reaching Ashford and affecting local traffic.

The potential checks (this side of the channel) fall arguably into 3 categories:
- "customs": includes duty/tax collection/refund, statistics gathering, certificates of origin and financial guarantees - UKBF at the border, HMRC remotely from Salford;
- safety and security: post-9/11 stuff - UKBF at the border;
- public (consumer)/environment/culture protection: includes controls on food, toys and stuff, things (like pallets) that could threaten bio-diversity/welfare - HMRC and others remotely from Salford, plus UKBF, local and regional government et al at the border. Basically, if you can think of a government department/agency, then they probably have an interest.

We will definitely need more officers (and agency officials) if we think we need controls on those nasty EU food and products that for some reason haven't killed us in the past couple of decades. To be pessimistic, some public order officers wouldn't go amiss either, in the short term.
