  Sometimes we need to question the amount of stuff that is criminalised before we start to bemoan the number of criminals. No-one would doubt that most of what is punishable is in the right category, but with such a complex and overloaded legal system it is possible to weight stats in many ways to ones own (or ones parties) advantage. It is also important to look at the underlying underpinning causes of crime - and not just to capture it in a soundbite for election purposes.
