Howard - everything matters, but nothing matters frightfully. the words we use matter as they impact on everything else.
Paul - "we old geezers" who remain unoffended are probably old white geezers who didn't grow up being called golliwogs and being hit for it.
There IS a limit to offence!! Jeremy Clarkson shouldn't have to apologise: his entire raison d'etre is to offend, but to do it with charm and humour, which he manages, and it de-fuses a lot of the venom.
We should take it all seriously, but not become fanatical; we should respect others viewpoints without becoming impotent; we should value our culture without de-valuing others.
