it has been anounced today that in scotland prescriptions will be free to everybody, currently the levy is £.3.00.
down here people pay over £.7 an item.
how can the scottish government afford to do this?
It can't.

the scots seem to cover a lot of public services for free, is it because they get a lot of dosh from the treasury, or is it all down to the porridge?
our friend jimmy long may be able to cast some light on the matter.

Free prescriptions and free university fees, Scotland either get too much money from the treasury or maybe they are quietly robbing Peter to pay Paul. Time will tell.
I wonder how many do not get their prescription filled because they cannot afford the £7, ok for those who get it free but £7 is a lot for those on a low income and no money in the bank.

I try to be neutral and polite but it is hard and getting even more difficult at times.

Indeed. Working hard to earn a decent wage means I have to consider whether or not I need the suggested prescription!!

I use a prepayment plan for my perscriptions you can pick up a form in Boots for it. it cost £10.00 pounds a month as I need at least 7 items a month i save at least £300.00 a year, a no brainer really, if you need more than £12.00 a month in charges you save a hell of a lot in the course of a year. Worth thinking about if you have to pay charges.
A dog is just not for christmas save some for boxing day
The scottish so called government can afford free prescriptions purely because the poor old english tax payer have not got the bottle to create a stir about this farcical situation. Every thing the scots get for free comes out of an english tax payers pocket.
Lets face it if they had to finance all these goodies themselves it would stop instantly.
Just as a point of interest what do we south of the border receive for free that the scots (and welsh)do not?? well let me tell you absolutely nothing.
I often view our Mp,s with suspicion but when you see the legislative rights handed to those in Wales and Scotland then it borders on criminal irresponsibility.

thanks for that james, confirms what most of us suspected.
Howard, I am as annoyed about this business as any one else. Yes I am from north of the border. I live here, and no, I do not pay for prescriptions. that is based purely on my age, not on where I was born.(I pay my taxes)
What the scots and welsh get for nothing is an insult to the people in england who pay the brunt of the tax bill which allows such wasteful practices. It is no wonder that Alex Salmond finds it difficult to contain his contempt for the english when you see him on television and if I had anything to do with it all this so called scottish inmdependance would be scrapped immediately.
That is where I stand on the matter Howard.
IT IS ABOUT TIME YOU PEOPLE SOUTH OF THE BORDER GOT OFF YOUR BUTTS AND DID SOMETHING ABOUT THIS RIDICULOUS SITUATION

You Are right Mr Long I done A post on this just last year ,I love Scotland, but they wanted their Independence then we should not be paying out anything to them at all,let them stand on their own that is what they asked for.We should close the door on any funding.

I was amazed about this as well. I believe the Conservatives tried to stop it but its gone ahead and will cost the taxpayer £57million pounds per year. However it is brilliant if they can pull it off...ie pay for it all.
They have no tuition fees either which again is something to be commended. Scotland seems to be fulfilling something of the socialist ideal.
England is the only country in the UK where these things are paid for over the counter by the already over taxed individual. Wales dont charge for Tuition fees either.

'Brilliant if they can pull it off' PaulB - no not at all. Here Jimmy and I can agree completely. We English taxpayers are paying for it as a result of the outdated 'Barnett Formula' that governs how much of our English taxes go to Scotland.
This must change and the Scottish Parliament should be made responsible for collecting all its revenue with a small element of Scottish taxation coming south to cover a fair share of the costs of non-devolved matters. I bet the Scottish government wont be so free with its money then.

My opinion is that free prescriptions can lead to a LOT of wasted medicines and non-essential prescribing. Reduce them yes, but not free.

Paul,
I am rather surprised to see your statement to the effect that "the conservitives tried to stop this abuse of the english taxpayer" Well if the sitting government cannot stop such ridiculous abuses then it leaves us all at the mercy of "Nationalist" whether they be Scots, Welsh, or Irish, Men of Kent, or Kentish men, there all a load of crack pots!!
P.S.
Paul it is not brilliant if they, the scots, can pull it off. We are not in a game where it is a question of "Heads the scots win, tails the english loose" although I am seriously thinking of moving back over the border???
