i see that the above has been awarded to a l/cpl james ashworth.the brave young man won it for protecting his comrades in the hellmans provance afganastan.a fierce gun fight ensued during an engagement with the taliban,he was killed by a grenade while protecting the rest of the platoon.this award is only the tenth [10] vc to have been won since ww2.

Obviously this young man was very brave but sadly a lump of metal is no substitute for a life, at least it means he will never be forgotten.

It is no mere piece of metal Jan.
But, yes - I certainly take the point that nothing, however valuable, cannot replace the life of this brave young soldier. We can just hope that his parents and family can have pride in what he has done and that it is being recognised with our greatest possible honour.
