in the 80s there was a direct link between Dover and Birmingham and Liverpool, albeit on a chugalong diesel.
This proposal would bring economic benefits and is the kind of strategic boost that Dover needs.

I went on that a few times Andrew only as far as Kensington Olympia though. It was stabled overnight at Ashford and got to Dover via Canterbury West and Minster. It was class 47 hauled with Mk2 stock. The buffet car never had any sandwiches for some reason or other!
Years before that there was the train to and from Birkenhead via Reading and through to Ramsgate..

the reason terry that there was no sarnies in the buffet car was they couldnt sell curly cornerd sarnies and pork pies dating back to the roman times.

I'm sure there was one at the Priory about ten years ago under one of those glass domes marked 1/6d!

An excellent proposal that would certainly be another leaf in Dover's book as far as promoting the cruise trade is concerned. Given the fact that Manston isn't being developed to its full potential, it also provides those of us who live in East Kent with a direct rail service to Gatwick. Shame some people can't see the economic benefits of Manston.

They presumably won't be using the High Speed line, but stilla very welcome idea.
More strategic thinking like this, please!
HS1 of course doesn't have a buffet service.
But if it did, it would surely serve sushi...
