I was chattting with a few chaps just a couple of weeks ago about this very subject and have also been looking at the implications for the Port Police of DHB's privatisation plan. What would it mean for them if the port were to be sold to overseas interests?

More nut-oil to stain the sledge-hammer of Lily-Law?
Why not let them man their own custody suit? Have use of the Dover premises or dump the 'suspect' on the Revenue Men?
Not that there will be a problem, many here are full of praise for their current traffic management arrangements.

The port police CAN still arrest people despite what the article makes out. It is a matter of transport of the prisoner beyond the mile jurisdiction that is the issue.
Let's not forget the wider impact of Dover Custody closing. The facility was used by UKBA immigration and customs too. A simple solution would be to re-open Dover Custody. Unfortunately it looks like it boils down to costs as with every other service in this current climate.

Transportation out of the one mile radius renders the arrest unlawful. That is why Kent Police have had to make arrests, because otherwise what do you do with the prisoner? This is why there is a bill to change the law on the one mile restriction. because it is no good making an arrest if you can't then follow it up at the custody suite

Kathy you misunderstand me, What I'm saying is the power of arrest still exists. The Port Police have not lost that.
The problems now lies how long does a bill take to get through parliament? Barry W may be one to shed light on all things politics, I have no idea.

There is a French police station inside the docks, I wonder if they could be asked nicely to look after any detainees since we have closed down our own custody suite.
A small guillotine would come in handy.
