Thanks for that Andrew.
The Port of Dover is a Trust and should remain so. Those that want to privatise things like ports, parks etc do it for one reason only...a quick profit. It should cease.

Nonsense Marek. I am not arguing in respect of Parks, but I certainly disagree over Ports.
There are many reasons for privatisation. For me the argument was simply to get a huge cash initial injection into Dover's economy and also to enable the local economy to benefit from an ongoing premium from Port traffic.
other arguments in favour include efficiency though that is perhaps less relevant as far as Dover is concerned.

Brian - that is not what I am referring to. Remember the debate in the 2005 GE and the rationale provided, the ring fenced proceeds to improve the transport infrastructure to the Port (dualling A2 for instance) and then the 'road pricing' of Port traffic to produce an ongoing premium to the local economy. The latter is something that cannot be done with he present trust status.
We may have lost the election and these proposals are now dropped all together but that does not stop me from still believing that this would have been good for Dover.

any sort of road pricing would have gone to central government.
this subject has been raised before, there would have been no benefit to the local economy.

The Port of Dover was set up as a Trust. How can that be Nonsense?.But what gives us (this generation) the right to alter that agreement?.

Typical
Sell of state/collective assets held in trust by and for the nation for a short (very) term cash boost to the exchequer's coffers and then what?
Job redundancy?
Removal of current local spend?
Reduced security?
Removal of Port Police due to costs?
