Pollution from Road Traffic in Dover and Children Exposed to Higher Diabetes Risk

  A very recent study has shown that increased exposure to road traffic is likely to cause children to suffer from high diabetes in adulthood.
  
  Children are especially vulnerable to air pollution.
  "They have a larger lung-to-body volume ratio, their airway epithelium is more permeable to air pollutants, and the lung defence mechanisms against particulate matter pollution and gaseous pollution are not fully evolved"

  Dover has a particularly high level of local road traffic, all Dover's schools are situated directly on main roads.
  The Port traffic is also alarmingly high, including a very high concentration of diesel pollution from an average of 8,000 lorries daily. Plus the ferry engine pollution.

  we had a bod from kent county council come down to dover some years back after reports of severe chest problems to many who live close to the docks.
  
  he was adamant that the air quality was excellent along marine parade, townwall street etc - never finished his speech properly because of a coughing fit.

  Premature deaths through air pollution in the UK goes in the tens of thousands a year, according to a study published on NHS Choices..
  
  Dover must not give in to decisions in high to continue mass pollution of the air we breathe.
  It has been a standing part of my representations in public consultations, both with DDC and with the Department for Transport.

  alex,this has been known fact in dover for a number of years,so its rather old news.there is an a20 action group in operation as I type.

  The research referred to in post 1, Brian, is recent news. It's a research published in May 2013.
  It's of interest to Dover.

  Not content with our massive air pollution problem, Dover is also the smokingest town in England but one.
  
  Sounds like we're damned either way, so maybe it's a case of "what the hell".
