I enjoy the Conservative conference but it seems to me to play a very different role to the Labour and LD ones.
Labour and LDs seem all too ernest at their conferences which play a major consititutional role for them. No doubt though they have a few beers as well.
For me and the vast majority of Conservatives they are just great get-togethers, lots of alcohol and fun. A chance to mix with the great and good and be on the spot where the news is being played out. The fringe meetings are best, they often provide a free lunch and a tincture or two while the Conference itself is primarily a backdrop to a social gathering.
The socialising itself is an important role also whilst socialising it does also represent a means to communicate ideas.
As for 'unromantic liasons' Howard - that certainly applied at Young Conservative conferences in the old days but a bit less so at the main Party Conference. Mind you, most of the Party Conferences I have been to I was accompanied by my wife!
