I know Vic has brought this up in an earlier thread, but I was informed today by a local business owner of a major fight that took place in the Market Square on Thursday between two groups that from all accounts was quite a bloody affair. The individual was so concerned that they immediately sought to ring the police, but got no answer. They then ran up to the Eight Bells to try and make contact via the radio system used to report issues and finally made contact. The local business person then monitored how long it would take to respond to the incident. An ambulance turned up almost immediately, but it took the police 45 minutes to turn up.I do know that this is not a new occurrence for our town, but it is not good enough. We need to be sure that we have acceptable police response times to such violent incidents. The idea of personal safety and security must be prerequisite of any town that aspires to attract new visitors or new businesses.

Welcome to the future John, this article will explain the significance of the 45 minute wait - not much fun for the paramedics who are putting themselves in the firing line.

Howard, this is an erosion of the very fabric of our society. It is a situation that needs directly addressing or we as a community wil pay a very high price .I do understand that this is an issue that effects the whole country, but Dover is where I live and it is where I have chosen to bring up my family in a secure and safe environment. This is and should be a non negotiable given for our town.

The first responsibility of government is to protect the citizens which is normally interpreted as defence against invasion but surely that should extend naturally to protection of the public? There will always be crime of course but the current situation with hardly any patrols, not visiting burglary victims and other things relegates the police to being clerical officers.
Eye catching crimes like rape or murder will always see enough detectives as the media are looking in but low level criminals are being given free rein to carry out their activities nowadays.

I wholeheartedly agree Howard, but all sides need to come together to address this, particularly in our own town.I am in no way, shape or form blaming the brave individuals who enter the police as a career path who do a very hard job in very tough circumstances. However, there does seem to be an issue with the underlying structures with regards to manning and deployment that is leaving our community far to vulnerable.
