    [Hello, it's me again.]

Judging by the degree of overlap; the small area on each horizontal bar that was affixed to the missing plank compared with the width of the 'lost' plank. This is the one section of the structure that bears the brunt of usage.
Given the wear and tear of constant shock against each of the upright 'jambs' , the off-set nature of the fixing and the fact that no part of the style has been left* far from the style, I conclude that what we have here is the foreseeable consequence of bad design.

Had each of the gate-horizontal members extended to 'mesh' with the frame (to act as the stops against the jamb posts) and the upright been set-back to affix fully with each horizontal, much improvement would be had.

*I edited from, "is far from" to "has been left far from". To make clear that any right-minded person would do that while a 'vandal' might have had some sport with it.
