"pointless vandalism"? Is there any other sort?

Leaving aside the bad name passed down through the ages for just another empire builder. Why assume it pointless?
Perhaps a group of [...Spartans passed by and with their historical hatred of barriers of all sorts did not, to their own way of thinking, destroy a fence, but reopened the countryside for the free passage of all.], out-door loving youths feel an urgent need to possess a lever and looking around found a source of suitable timber? Or. Were clambering over the fence and it broke hurting or nearly harming one of them, then they become indignant as to the paucity of maintenance going on and made that need plain?
Either way. Would it be 'pointless' to seek to encourage such youth to effect their environment in a positive way? While there is always a degree of boundary-testing in growing up there may also be a degree of pride. Why not make repeated efforts to give youth the opportunity to righteously cry out, "I did this!" by showing a willingness to engage with local people of all ages without prejudgement?
    AND
While they were out and de-fencing, and giving someone a sunny morning's work, they were not kicking the panels of some expensive motor vehicle.

I am probably getting myself something of a bad name for seeing another side or explaining away 'obvious' wrongdoing or simply for not taking-up the cudgel or pitchfork and riding out with the tar & feather brigade.
I do not say what I say just for the sake of (further) mischief making, but, be it a societal problem or a broken fence one can either get all hot-and-bothered or one can attempt to fix it.
