Sometimes I despair at the ideas put forward and their supporters.
Some flats maybe but surely not a building that large, there are already plenty of shops available with so many people now buying online we do not need more, the town needs to look forward not back

Apart from the 5 storey aspect I think its exactly what's needed. A centralisation of the shop offerings, everything beyond pencester is basically dead or dying. The Charlton centre isn't long for this world! Concentrating the central offering around St james and the market square development is the best chance for the survival of a 'high street'
If only they would close Castle street and King street to traffic!
9 and 10 king st, I guess one would be the kebab shop?

Kebab shop is number 8. Most of the development is in the block behind those frontages.

Does look too bad to me - it'll just bring that whole block up to roughly the same height as the tallest point in RB's photo.

Four storey building I could live with. I think comparisons with height of the pub and M&S would be better.
From the front.

There was a young lady of Wantage
Of whom the Town Clerk took advantage
Said the Borough Surveyor
'You really must pay her;
You've totally altered her frontage'.

No bigger than the gateway flats, so why not.
ANd yes, close castle street. No need for the cars to cut through there.

I agree about Castle Street we can but dream. The big problem would be Stembrook carpark access and I suspect the businesses in the area would be very unhappy.

Simply dual it up to the gateway office traffic lights, only king st itself would need closing. Businesses on both sides of market square benefit as the road no longer presents a barrier to the movement of people.

OH! I was thinking of the whole of Castle Street where the vet etc are not just the King Street end.

I'm all for development of neglected parts of the Dover, but I feel 5 storeys is too high. 3 or 4 - fine.
The town has generally avoided tall buildings over the years. Burlington House and Maybrook House are a sign of that folly.

As long as the place is going to be used they can build it 10 or more storeys high

Thankfully the application isn't for 10 or more storeys. Local politicians aren't the best people to make the right decisions are they?
